Call For Papers

The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Zone IV invites the submission of abstracts for papers, presentations, posters and workshops for the 2022 Zone IV Conference in Vancouver, Canada from May 12-14, 2022. ASEE Zone IV encompases the Pacific Northwest (PNW), Pacific Southwest (PSW) and Rocky Mountain (RM) Sections.

This year’s theme is Impact Through Equity. Recent events have challenged engineers to reflect on the impact of their actions on society. ASEE has declared the 2021-2022 society year the Year of Impact on Racial Equity.  During the COVID-19 pandemic teaching modes and equity has and continues to be a concern. The conference program will focus on the theme of equity. Submissions aligned with the conference theme are encouraged; however, as with previous Zone and Section conferences, submissions on any topic relevant to engineering education will also be considered. A sample list of possible topics to get ideas percolating can be found below.

The four possible presentation formats for this conference are described below. Please choose the appropriate option for each submission. As a hybrid conference, virtual presentation and participation will be possible in any of these four formats. Works-in-Progress (WIPs) are welcome in any presentation format. Please see submission deadlines below.

1. Full Paper for Publication and Presentation

Please indicate in the first sentence of your abstract that you intend to follow up with a full paper. Submit an abstract of maximum 500 words and include, as appropriate, a clear description of the objectives and motivation, relevant background, assessment plan and results (if not a WIP). Authors of accepted abstracts will present their work in a conference session and will be required to prepare a full paper (maximum 10 pages) for review prior to publication in the conference proceedings. For papers to be published in the conference proceedings at least one author must register and present. Full papers are also eligible for the section best paper competition; the winner advances to the zone level and, if successful, to the national level best paper competition. It is expected that the author(s) of a full paper submission will support the conference by reviewing one or more abstracts and papers submitted for the Zone Conference.

2. Abstract-Reviewed Presentation

Please indicate in the first sentence of your abstract that you intend to prepare a presentation only (no full paper).  Submit an abstract of maximum 500 words and include, as appropriate, a clear description of the objectives and motivation, relevant background, assessment plan and results (if not a WIP). It is not required to follow up with a full paper in order to present in a conference session.

3. Abstract-Reviewed Poster

Please indicate in the first sentence of your abstract that you intend to prepare a poster only (no full paper or presentation). Submit an abstract of maximum 500 words and include, as appropriate, a clear description of the objectives and motivation, relevant background, assessment plan and results (if not a WIP). It is not required to follow up with a full paper in order to participate in the conference poster session.

4. Workshops

Please indicate in the first sentence of your abstract that this is a workshop proposal. Limit your workshop description to a maximum of 1000 words that clearly states the objectives, targeted audience, and learning outcomes, as well as activities planned and approximate length.  Workshops are generally scheduled for 90 minutes, however other timeframes will also be considered. Please indicate if participants need to bring supplies, such as a laptop. The conference is supporting a mix of in-person, hybrid or online workshop modalities, please indicate your modality preference and give a brief description of how attendees will participate.

All abstracts and workshop proposals must be submitted through the Monolith abstract and paper submission portal.

To submit an abstract or workshop proposal:

  • Log in to monolith.ASEE.org (or create an account)
  • Go to Conferences and Meetings/Section & Zone Meetings/2022 Zone IV Conference
  • Select Manage Papers
  • Select Submit a new abstract
  • Copy/paste your abstract into the text box and complete the submission form with author information, plagiarism policy acceptance, etc…
